Oil Prices at One-Month High on OPEC Hopes

Oil prices advanced for a third consecutive day to reach a one-month high amid growing hope that the world’s largest producers may agree a deal to combat the stubborn glut of global supplies. The price of Brent crude climbed to $46.61, 10pc higher than at the start of the month but still well below the 2016 highs of $52.50 a barrel seen in June. A fresh focus on new approaches to recycling tyres is needed

A fresh focus on new approaches to recycling tyres is needed

The number of vehicles is growing worldwide and as a result the number of tyres is increasing too. Hundreds of millions of tyres are discarded each year. Their disposal represents a major global problem. There are serious hazards associated with stockpiling used tyres, such as uncontrollable fires. There is also the problem of illegal dumping, which results in pollutants and promotes growth of pests and insects. And burning tyres leads to the emission of harmful compounds. TRA: Waste-storage rules will “decimate” UK tyre recycling

London – Many tyre recycling operations could soon close due to planned new rules intended to increase the safety of waste storage sites in the UK, the Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) has warned. Proposals by the Environment Agency (EA) to regulate the storage and processing of end-of-life tyres will force many operators out of business by the end of this year, said a TRA press statement. In particular, the association believes that new EA requirements for maximum stack heights and […]

Could carbon pricing incentivise governments to reduce emissions

Could carbon pricing incentivise governments to reduce emissions?

Carbon pricing creates a financial incentive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Done well, it could make carbon the most important commodity in the world. “The carbon market is the centrepiece of Québec’s strategy for fighting climate change”, said David Heurtel, Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and the Fight Against Climate Change, who in February spoke about the province’s latest whip-round. In keeping with ambitions to slash greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 20 percent and launch a raft of sustainability projects […]

Tyre makers hit the skids with Coveney

Simon Coveney, the minister for housing, planning and local government, is abolishing a scheme of self-regulation for tyre makers and the motor industry. The move comes after a study found that nearly half of all garages are not recycling tyres correctly. Coveney has told the Dail there is “a serious problem with waste tyres in Ireland”, with widespread illegal dumping and up to half of them “unaccounted for”. A self-policing scheme has failed to resolve the problem. “In discussions prior […]

Those against the move insist it is a new, unwarranted tax. Eddie Cunningham outlines the official view while independent expert Padraic Deane reports on why many retailers are […]
